An FDA proposal could make OTC switches easier. Hereโ€™s what the industry has to say

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ๐™๐˜ผ๐™Ž๐™. An FDA proposal currently on the table could make the switching of a pharmaceutical product from Rx to OTC status easier. Think about it.  If this proposal is approved, it could be the first move to โ€œmodernizeโ€ this area of regulation in a very long time. BUT. There might be some catches.  Might the new regulations permit simultaneous marketing of a product as Rx and OTC, e.g. for different indications? Seems like it might. And how about reporting of โ€œevents?โ€  Whatever the details, it is quite likely that the pharmaceutical industry will benefit, with the introduction of an OTC increasing the use of a class of drugs by 30%.  And the public also benefits, with โ€œover 81% of adultsโ€ having used an OTC medication as a first line therapy.
