𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝙁𝘼𝙎𝙏. This issue comes up every so often. Well, it has come up again. In a nutshell, it sounds like this. If airline pilots have a mandatory retirement age of 65, shouldn’t doctors also? Or should they at least have competency checks? Memory tests for Internists, dexterity tests for Surgeons, etc.? Carried to the extreme, as this NYU medical ethicist poses the question, the issue sounds like “Would you go to a 100 year old doctor?”

Want a countervailing perspective? Here’s one. With a very high percentage of physicians burned out post-pandemic, and many retiring early, do we really need to give doctors yet another reason to hang up the stethoscope prematurely?
