A recently published study used NLP (Natural Language Processing) to explore the contents of approximately  1.5 million messages received by over 600 physicians, looking for a possible relationship between message contents and physician burnout.  The finding?  There wasn’t any relationship of this kind discovered. BUT!  There was an alarming amount of profanity, vulgarity, hostility, threats and other negativity being expressed in a very small minority of communications from patients.  Low incidence, high offensiveness.  Filtering out such comments, or triggering alarms when they are encountered, are potential actions that might be considered as a result of these findings.
